our own barrage. Anyhow this is certain, the enemy turned a searchlight on those long lines, or waves of men, & then "poured in" a most destructive fire. Two attacks were launched on the German positions but confusion was created by some person giving the order to "Retire". It was alleged that a German officer hoodwinked our boys with this order, but at all events it led to confusion.
