& miserable when we camped on a semi-swamp behind some batteries where there were some gigantic naval guns.   We had some boards & rough bits of timber over which we spread tarpaulin & managed to get some sleep & keep reasonably dry, the guns meantime roaring all night.   The next evening we cautiously made our way in small squads to a hollow on the road passing to the village of Lagnicourt.   There were a few dug outs in this place which were promptly grabbed by those who got in first.   Two of my platoon mates - one a school teacher
