inquired my military age.   I told him 44.   "Oh, but you're older in civilian life", said the Sergeant;   "Now look here you haven't got the activiy of the young men, so I'm giving you a job as baggage guard down at the village (Vaulx)."

"I came here for the real thing", I said.

"Yes, that's all right" said the Sergeant, "you'll be all right going over - I know you're game enough, but we may have to come back in a ding dong hurry & then you'll be left behind, & you know what that means."

I cut short further discussion by saying I was determined to go over with the boys
