either move off at a moment's notice or dwell in a certain spot till the troops are mad with impatience.   Making all allowances for picking up absentees or checking generally the requirements or shortages of the draft, I can't see what benefit could be gained by keeping men for two hours in the snow, excepting, perhaps, to test their hardihood.

At last we made a start down the road & reached the large railway station at Etaples, where we had another long wait, but we beguiled the time by drinking milk cocoa (free) & eating cakes at a moderate charge.   There were a number of Portuguese soldiers on the station & very nice fellows, but of course
