was still cold & I had no blanket;  only my heavy overcoat.  However I got hold of an old horrible blanket & was about to doze off when our bombardment of the German position commenced.  It was a holy terror.  I believe six hundred guns were used;  the guns flamed & roared for miles.  Nothing, we thought, could live under such a fire & yet the eight waves of Australian troops who were lying down waiting for the barrage to lift so that they could storm the German position, found that Fritz & his machine guns were ready as quick as the opportunity presented itself.  Some of our men asserted that a lot of the division were killed by
