February 3rd & 4th 1917

The old town of Boulogne looks well in the vicinity of the Quay but as we climbed the slopes on the outskirts we passed through shockingly made streets, sordid squalid tenements, and a slum population.   We slept in what are called rest huts, and although it was sternly prohibited many of our boys had a festive time in Boulogne that evening.

Next day we were marched back to town & entrained in cattle trucks for our destination.   It was a slow moving train & the little French
