from the tower of the Cathedral.   It had been struck by a shell, & it was surprising that such a large metal structure did not break away by its own weight.   Most of the houses in the town had suffered from shell fire, as we noticed on our way to a midday rest camp.   In the evening we were in town on leave but it was dark & miserable, most of the former inhabitants were still away.   There were a few shops open for the sale of odds & ends & there were two establishments for the sale of beer.   An inspection of the first one satisfied me.   Hogwash beer was being served out in 2 lb jam tins at a franc.   A woe begone looking middle-aged woman
