Staple - Stayed here 8 days - our first taste of billets - I was in a farm-house - We always remember Staple - its good people and its cheap eggs and beer (1d per glass).

April 10th

Moved to Outtersteene, nearer the guns, visited Bailleul, Merris, Meteran, St Omer and Cassel during our stay here. - Here also I was made a temporary corporal.

April 18th

Moved to Sailly-sur-le-Lys, which showed signs of shrapnel and shells but civilians still lived here.

April 19th

Moved to reserves at Croix-Blanc corner outside Fleurbaix.
Here I first saw a shell burst, under amusing , if exciting circumstances, for it burst in our house.
Next we moved to Fleurbaix village and I had my first taste of fatigues, up as far as the support line.

May 3rd

We took over the front line Trenches relieving a Manchester (bantam) Regt.
