My 20th Birthday, duely celebrated at Abbassia - We shifted camp to Heliopolis (connected to Cairo by the best tram service I have ever seen) - More hard training in the boiling sun here.
An uncanny experience on a picquet at Mancheit-el-Sadir.
A picquet for two weeks at Bab-el-Sharia (Wassa District) during which I had many experiences, and learned a lot about the natives - These picquets were night affairs and we spent the day at Kasr-el-Nil.
During all this time I learned Cairo fairly thoroughly - visited its Mosques, Bazaars, Museums etc, and got to know the wily native - visited the Pyramids and Sphinx at Giza several times, also the Citadel.
Cairo has a fascination and smell all its own.

Entrained for Tel-el-Kebir (here was fought the battle of Tel-el-Kebir in 1882 when "Fuzzy Wuzzy" broke the British Square, but was defeated by Wolsely). Joined the 4th Infantry Battalion
