the usual steamship routes. - Tropical storms of short duration often passed over us, these could be seen approaching, and after drenching us with rain for a few minutes, would leave again a sea of calm, and a sky of cloudless blue.

Indeed a pleasant trip during which I learned many things, and made many friends.

Nov 30th

Disembarked at Suez, after lying at the Canal-mouth (on which played a search-light) all night. - Suez, a lazy, hot, sleepy, town, a combination of sand, niggers, and flies. - By train (via Ismalia) to Cairo, passed desert lands broken here & there by "oasis-villages" and pestered by Arabs selling oranges. Detrained at Zeitoun and encamped on the desert at Abbassia (famous for its barracks) - Training hard here - on Christmas day "Billy-cans" and "Comforts" were distributed.

Jan 1st

New-Year saw us at Kasr-el-Nil Barracks, and on picquet duty in the city to quell possible riots which however were not as serious as was anticipated.
