Oct 2nd

I was recalled suddenly to France - I went via Folkestone - Boulogne and Havre, up to Caestre. Here we waited in Reserve for we heard the Battalion were heavily engaged in the "3rd Battle of Ypres"

Oct 8th

We expected it and were ready; we were called up at midnight, and went to Ypres, then to Cafe Belge, and on to Dickebusch where the boys were - Next night to Anzac Ridge in Trenches. My! what a night and dark, we got lost a few times, Jabber Track and Helles Track at last! and we got there - I had No. 9 Platoon. Next day we witnessed some rather exciting Aerial Combats, and that night were relieved, and went to Half-Way House, then to Whippenhock (Mud-Farm) via Ypres. - Here I had my first good look at that poor battered city, and battered it is. They say, the most knocked about city in the battle Zone anywhere!
