- a lot of my old friends were killed here.
April 18th - April 28th
I went on an escort job to Calais via St. Omer, had a rough spin getting out and what pitiable sights behind the line - refugees everywhere, but I returned by a roundabout way a few days later via Burgette and Aire, to Borre Siding, where the boys were having a few days rest but still under shell fire.
May 3rd
Then another trip to the line to Meteran [Meteren] where amongst other things I salvaged wheat - we went in via Fletre and came out via Caestre - remember the burning farmhouses?
May 9th
Then we went to Sercus via Wallon Capelle, [also spelt Wallon Capel] where we were bombed every night from the air.
May 19th - May 23rd
The Battalion stayed in reserve this time at Pradelles, I stayed at Hazebrouck with the transport and took charge of the Batallion Guard - then to Rouge Croix.
