Finally Sydney - early in June - Thus ending all these days, nay, years of war, with its accompanying hardships and trials - yet still mingled through it all are times of real joy and happiness.
This, is an effort to keep a record of places and countries I have seen rather than, to tell a connected story, - To keep a record for years to come. Yes! and to remind me of all those dear friends, - some are gone, yet still some remain - and friends made and tried under such conditions as are set down in these pages, are friends for ever and ever.
"Tis all a chequer board of nights and days
Where destiny with men for pieces plays
Hither and thither, moves and mates and slays
And one by one back in the closet lays."
"Lo! some we loved, the lovliest and the best,
That time and fate of all their vintage pressed
Have drunk their cup a round or two before
And one by one crept silently to rest."
