flight - soldiers and civilians, and we quietly detrained, dumped our packs on the side of the road, and marched to meet Fritz. Such sights we saw that night and next day and we realised that everything, Hazebrouck, St Omer, and the Channel Ports, depending upon our one little division. But we were the "1st Australian Division" and that's why we were there, and we did the impossible, we stopped him for good and all.
April 13th
We entrenched in front of Strazelle, facing Merris and stopped the advance on this line - 11 days our boys held those outposts without relief. I spent most of that time in cellars in Strazelle village, while it was steadily pounded to pieces by H.E. Shells - what times! - what feasts - how the champagne flew - what salvage - but what casualties and destruction - shall I ever forget it all.
