27th (what a change to be at sea again, in spite of "life-belts all the way" and "submarine guards" - Arrived at Marseilles on 30th.
April 1st
The beginning of a wonderful train journey, which lasted 3 days and 3 nights and took us right across France - The charm of the South of France in its very green gown of early spring, to our eyes, long tired with sand and desert, held us spell-bound, and as we passed on and on, past rivers, mountains and great manufacturing towns, Lyons, Avignon, Verseilles and Paris itself, cheered by the people, we were thinking "Here surely is a land worth fighting for."
