Dear Sir,
I have been told that plans have been published of the scene of the fighting at Kaba Kaul. Could you put me in the way of getting one, or are they only published for the military?
With reference to the missing articles belonging to my son, and your letter stating that Dr. Maguire had the Spirit Flask, Pocket Case, and books on Tropical Medicine, I write to say that I have received from Dr. Maguire the Pocket Case only. Dr. Maguire admits that he had the Spirit Flask but could not find it. On asking how that was, he told me that he knew he had it because it was on his mantlepiece at Rabaul, and when he left he told his servant to pack it; since then he has seen nothing of it. I told Dr. Maguire that if that was the way my son's effects were looked after, it was no wonder that so many had gone astray.
It appears to me that there has been, to say the least, great carelessness and negligence in the taking care of my son's effects. Had he been on active campaign on land one might have expected certain things to have gone astray, but considering the circumstances and the fact that all his things were together in his cabin, it is, to say the least, not very credible that they should have been allowed to be lost.
