I, luckily for myself, just missed.

Oct 15th

Found me on my way to France and the Battalion again.  I went from Folkestone to Boulogne and then by train to our base at Etaples, where I stayed, over a week, passing doctors, and drilling at the famous bull-ring.

Oct 27th

After two days train journey we arrived at Albert (much talked of then) and here we stayed for a few days, and became familiar with "Somme" mud.  We tramped through miles of this sticky, slimy repulsive mud (sometimes up to our knees) up to Delville-Wood, which place of ill fame had been captured a few weeks before, after changing hands several times (it was here that the South Africans did so well but alas were almost wiped out. - Scottish troops also had been in the thick of it, for the remains of the fight lay thick
