[Page 87]

But I had my revenge; for a few days later, they all had it, then they called it "days disease" because it made one ill for a few days, and just as the doctor was thinking of evacuating one you got better. I think it was Spanish flu only no one died of it. I was alright in a few days. There was a small cemetry near Franzvilliers and some of our men who were killed in the raid were buried there.

Day by day the guns keep coming into the hollow, and one night a barrage was put down and a small stunt made. Next day a good few prisoners came past, on their road to "London".

We left Franzvilliers and marched out a good bit, when we were picked up by motors and taken for the weeks rest to Bivouacs in a wood at Glisy not far from Amiens, on the Somme.

Chapter 1X Explanations.

As some of the things mentioned might puzzle the unlearned, I will offer a few explanations. Tracer Bullets are bullets of which the rear part is hollow and filled with magnesium ribbon which ignites on being fired, and so the bullet can be seen, even in daytime as it flies along looking like a phosphorescent bee on the wing. It is also used for igniting ballons; the zeppelin at Cuffley was brought down by it.
