road.

The only thing we had to do here was to fetch our rations from a trench about 100 yds away, to do this one had to dodge in between the times, he used to put trench mortar bombs about. These outposts are, "no bon", for we used to stand to all night and then sleep all day in the brown dust in the bottom of the trench.

At night we used to volunteer to dig the outpost longer, for it was rumoured that a battalion of Yanks were going to join us up. So we dug and connected up with another outpost. When digging I noticed a peculiar thing for a shell had gone into the ground when it was very soft and not exploded properly, and there was a small cavern or one might compare it to a bubble in the earth.

The Yanks came one night and it was a beastly night too, drizzling rain. And they were dog tired. We "hiked",  it all the way from Camon about 15 kilos said one. I said to one, just to see how he'd take it, did you see or smell any dead hunks coming here, he was silent then he turned to the chap on the other side sure and he's only kidding me he said and I said youll see them there tomorrow morning
