proper way.Whats the use of trying to get a fellow to be good, by telling him of the good time he'll have when he gets to heaven, if he's good here, or how loving God is, as some do? When men are sometimes in hell under a heavy bombard, its like a nightmare sometimes if you have little cover. And with men going rotten around, and the progeny of flies an inch long crawling through them. 

People who are good only, because they believe in heaven aren't much. Try hard and be straight for straightness sake, and if there is a heaven, they can let me go there if they like. I'm not worrying. Religion is only fire insurance with a lot of people. They talk of the the revival of religion at the war umph! "I ha'e me doots", and big ones too; kills it I think. Some of the old hands are practically broken hearted, the war seems as if it will last for ever. Two Anzacs were sitting in the trench one day and, "things' were only middlin". "Well George said the other three years ago we were sitting in the trenches just like this. "Yes! said George, and if we have luck we'll still be sitting in them in another 3 years time as things are; my hair twitched and nearly threw my hat off. The concert parties used to sing a song "This war will be over and won in 1951". Its fine to stand in an outpost in drizzling rain, make a puddle with your feet, and think of all these cheerful things.
