for the trench, I left mine behind and my feet got tangled in the long weeds and I fell over. Anyhow we all got into the trench safely, Fritz put a few shots over and a little later we went out and got the canisters and sneaked through the wheat to the outposts once again. The trenches here are cut all through the wheatfields and some of them are nice crops 4 or 5 feet high. Wherever a shell falls in the wheat, it causes a great splather especially a 5.9, in a short crop say a foot high it completely blasts the wheat away just around where it bursts. Of course there are shellholes everywhere they resemble a place where a tree has been dug round and burnt out. One can always put his foot in them when on fatigue at night. I don't think I ever missed one I found everyone with my big feet.

Ater 4 days in the old German line we went up to close supports a good bit up a long C,T, through a barb wire fence which was built up over the C T. The support was not the cheerfullest place on earth it was a wider trench than I like and some dead Fritz's were lying just at the back.
