That night about 6 o'clock, we started up toward the line; on reaching the Amiens Cambrai road it was crowded with traffic, all moving up towards the line; great howitzers like hollow logs, guns and services wagons packed tight on the road in one moving mass. For bases were to move up as we advanced. We had to walk right off the road, there was no room for anything there. Near the old reserves a battery of 10 inch were installed, and were firing. As we walked by them, everything would go black in front of us as they fired, and we would tramp in wavy zigzags all over the road. The men used to abuse the gunners partly in chaff. But we were glad when we passed by them all the same for the concussion makes ones head ring. 

I forgot to record when we were in the trench about 3 o'clock of the seventh, flames rose up in the wood near villers Brettonneux. Fritz had suspicions of something there, and put a few shells into it, and got amongst a dozen or so tanks hidden in waiting there, and set fire to them. The flames rose up flowery shape quite 90 feet high a fine spectacle, but not cheering all the same.
