In Boozencourt cemetry was a large stone & on it was the following: Ici Repose Francois jui mort pour la patrie Juin 1870.Transc:- Here lies Francis who died for his country June 1870.
We reached and spent a few days in billets in another village Boozencourt I think. From there we moved to Allonville where we were billetted in a large barn. There are such a lot of large barns in the country districts of France.
We were having a weeks rest here and bit of drill each day. I enjoyed myself alright I found a place where one could get a dixie of milk for ½ franc 5d. I used to trot round and try and buy eatables off the French folk, some of my mates used to get me to inquire the price of vin Blanc and suchlike rubbish; which reminds me of when we were at Calais and one of our cute mugs came back from the town and skited about the champagne he got at 2 francs a bottle. All enquiries I have made here I always found champagne was never less than 10 francs a bottle; the clever boy had been drinking vin blanc. I can read French, but I can't speak much so I pay some school children 1d to read some French over for me.
Our men are spoiling the school children of this part you should hear them swear in English and play two-up.
From Allonville one can get a fine view of Amiens, spread out among the green trees down in the valley of the Somme "Pretty as a picture", High above all
