At night the stars shine down peacefully and in the morning the birds sing for it is quiet then, the grass is bright green and long, and here are a small portion of the fields of death. What is the use of it all what great purpose does it serve, is man going to give up his stupid devilry, and climb climb till he becomes a demi-god. Slowly always the world is going forward in spite of all. War is senseless. 

Along in a corner of the trench two Germans had been buried by their comrades. Two little crosses composed of wooden slats were placed over them with, "Hier Ruht ein Musketier", on them. The trench had a lot of pineapple bombs and a german rifle grenade that was evidently fired with a live round. He had some Mills bombs captured in the big retreat and of course piles of his "potato mashers". There were numbers of his letters and papers. In one of his papers was the picture of a Minnenwerfer king , a statement of the English national debt, an advertisement  of the winning number of a war gold lottery, and an adv't for a picture show starring, "Texas Fred" the Mexican cowboy. First time I knew Texas was in Mexico since 1863. Some of our fellows went out salvaging for the Museum to be, but I think they kept most
