1 Chapter 1 1917 "Enlistment"
It was a bright sunny morning in August, that I wended my way to Victoria Barracks; which after sundry inquiries, I reached. For I had come down from the country a couple of days previously, to enlist & was new to the city & all its ways.
On reaching the Barracks I lined up outside with many other youths who were impatiently waiting for their medical examination.
After waiting for some considerable time, my turn came in its due course; I went up, undressed, & after doing various evolutions such as hopping etc I was pronounced fit, dressed & went back to my newfound friends.
After an hour or so of waiting, we were lined up, & marched off to Sydney showground camp where we were fed. In the evening, we passed another medical examination, were inoculated, & then recieved our first, "Marmalade", issue.
Bewildering enough is the first day to any recruit, bewildered as I was with scrambling for berths to such fuss packing & unpacking, putting clothing on & off I was glad to go out with some new found friends in the Carter boys to the Burlington Hotel for a few hours after
