Around the Bocas the water is very clear and resembles fresh water due I suppose to the outpourings of the Orinoco river; I was almost sorry to leave so beautiful a land its memory will remain for many a day. I am so fond of the beautiful.

In front leading the van as we steamed along was a French cruiser behind her was the transport Aeneas and we brought up the rear. At about 4 oclock of the same day we picked up a West Indian transport,  "The Magdalene", off the Island of Grenada. She was a wretched old tub, and brought up the rear on the horizon mostly. 

Grenada is even more wild and picturesque looking than Trinidad. Early on the morning of the 10th we sighted an Island said to be Martinique; it certainly looked volcanic but unluckily the rain and clouds hung and drifted about it, so that one could not get a clear view.

On the left we soon passed another Island with very high mountains on it , St Vincent I suppose.

These two islands met with terrible disaster some 15 to 20 years ago when Mt Peleé broke out in eruption and destroyed nearly everything on
