Had a quiet time today, at 4 pm. I wandered off up Ultimo to La Basseville [La Basse Ville] to Co Headquarters, met Major Grant & together we in broad day light cruised toward the debris, its a pert stunt crawling on your tummy for Warnton [Warneton] Tower overlooks our position, we cruised onward looking for dugouts found 3 or 4 in the Tannery in one there are quite a number of P.C.s left by Fritz, in all there is a certain amount of furniture.
With arrival of parties we commenced construction of Como Trench, 80 yds for 50 men, 5 feet deep, we struck concrete beds, burrowed under them, water pipes and railway, finished at 1.30 am camoflaged work to hide it from Fritz. The men work awfully well, of course they grumble like the devil.
Wandered round other parts of the line including a cruise to the bank of the River Lys. Fritz has a strong line [indecipherable] wire out right down to the water.
