The village of Hamel & Somme flat was heavily shelled by Fritz. Some of the cottages were on fire. I watched it with considerable interest for a few minutes, some houses were burning. Got to bed about 11 pm - took off my clothes. Bought today, Madame's fowls, 15 for 5 francs each. We do not know exactly where we are, neither does Fritz. The 4th Divis got 150 prisoners this morning in a counter attack for a small village.

Got up about 9 am & cruised round village till dinner time. The French interpreter came in & stated that a cart cover had been stolen by our men. Oh! There are hundreds of troops around & it is impossible to say who took it, things disappear & candidly I cannot blame anyone for stealing if it is to make himself more comfortable. A soldier has a pretty rough time. Our men are very confident & look forward eagerly to coming into close touch with Fritz, there spirit is wonderful.
