When we detrained at 10.30 pm & went out to Authie after a few moments here, we left at 3.45 am for Marieux where motor lorries at 9 am carried us on to Franvillers, a quaint little French town on the Somme, not far from Armiens. Arrived 11.30 am, no sleep all night and very frosty.

​Florrie's birthday. I would like to be home today instead of wandering round these dusty roads crowded with troops & transport. Things are busy, artillery & mortar buses are everywhere, flying troops along the lanes & kicking up clouds of dust. All the people have a frightful wind up & many have gone away. We have no blankets, all I have I stand up in so I cruised round to find a billet, got one quite easily. The lady was frightened of old Fritz & remarked that there would be a bed for me tonight, if she didn't go away. The Major is tearing round and getting excited. I am much amused over the general treatment meted
