to meet Major Grant at La Basseville - Birdwood was going up also. Whilst walking up Ultimo Lane a Fritzie plane flew over awfully low. The black crosses under the wings were quite easily seen. I watched its evolutions for some minutes. Picked up Grant & enjoyed a roam round. Birdwood did not turn up. Our heavy artillery commenced to stonker Warneton - 15" Hows - my goodness they do kick up a fuss. great clouds of dust followed each explosion. I watched 5 shells come over, the 6th hit the famous Warneton Tower a thin high concrete tower used by Fritz for observation purposes, when the dust settled a little the tower had disappeared - to the great joy of all. The Tower was of reinforced concrete 10 feet diameter & easily 60 feet high, we must have wasted tons of shells on it, our guns always registered on it.
