walk there & back & this shady clump of beeches I think I have described before. The house is full of large rooms & has a lovely conservatory a long narrow building with sweet smelling shrubs on one side & on the other chairs the passage ending in a large cupola with tree ferns & other exotic plants.

Nothing save usual routine. We have been constructing fences of barbed wire the last 3 days & are glad of the week end in order to grow the flesh on our hands. Outside the window where I am sitting there is a pool of rain water in which the starlings are washing themselves - they are not so dirty here & even a little sparrow with much trepidation has joined them perhaps because dust is a negligible quantity. It is always raining here never bright sunshine for more than an hour without a heavy shower of rain. And now a chaffinch the first I have ever seen has joined them. The building adjoining us here is a hospital filled mainly with wounded Huns. Indeed Huns are plentiful about here wandering about under Allied Guard but too well content to make any attempt to escape.

22-9-18
Church this morning  - on way home see 11 planes overhead in the same quarter of the sky. They resemble a flock of birds.

23-9-18 to 3-10-18
Nothing save usual school of Instruction work -

3-10-18
Rode on bike to Stonehenge & Amesbury a distance of 2-3 miles returning by Chorlderton a smelly little village with a ditch running round it which is crossed by several brick bridges. Each quaint old house stands back from path & is full of flowers even at the late period
