darkness set in & I was put off the right road by the prevailing courtesy of English people who are either the greatest idiots on earth or people with a perverted sense of humour which delights in misleading strangers within the country. A more lying & deceitful race it is hard to find. They are so shameless. Owing to misdirection I had to walk last 6 miles. I was so tired that I could not sit on bicycle & had to ask some men to wheel the machine for me. The road is lonelier than Australian bush & as black as a pitch barrel. I went over the handle bars several times owing to running into side of road which I could not see. Once I landed on a hawthorn hedge & a lively & prickly seat it was. I tore my face, had gravel rash on my hands & cut my trousers. When I arrived at Barracks I had no tea owing to having to meet someone at 8.20 pm or 20-20 as they say here. Pearce & Smith were merry & insisted on riding the bike round the room & ended in a heap with tables, forms & bicycle in one big heap & the bike was damaged when it was returned. I was told I would not be allowed to have it again - at least I had some fun out of it.

Exams & loafing is order of the day mixed with wild rumours as to movements of Australians.

Though low in funds have decided to draw some money & go on leave Torquay & Bournemouth being my objectives. The control of a Bradshaw is an art & can only be acquired after years of experience. However as I was puzzling over it in the Club a pretty fair haired dolly faced wife of an officer came to my assistance & we worked out a time table an act of kindness as for few & far between with English people that I will always cherish its memory.
