Parade this morning via Esplanade. N 9 in rear under Creighton makes bad tail. Incident of Hawkins thence to Park where our team plays S. Africa. We score 100 & lose match by 20 runs only. Nowise plays for them. Parade is reformed at 1.30 & dismissed. Hence no march thro city & I am stranded as I do not know arrangements for this afternoon. I go to Royal to see if I can find them Scotson accompanying me. Met Gorrie & decide to return with him to ship On way look into Town Hall which is not as big or as finished as ours. Here we meet Jan & Michel Chermasky & we go to book tickets after hearing them play. Then with Gorrie go to ship & change then we go to Botanical Gardens These are small like most other things here. There is no variety or silence & palm & hot house are filled with ferns or young palms - no choice or rare plants. The place is artistically laid out but apparently is not yet finished as lower part is used as a tip The one point of beauty is a palm tree walk running at foot of hill. Path is bot straight & level & here there are some borders & plants with perfume. We then walk along Bot.Garden road & catch tram to Tollgate & walk along to Mayville though it is too dark to see much though it would be beautiful in daylight One house on a hill standing back from road is fine effect. Then we return to Club & I met Pa McCutcheon, Molesworth & Major Maxwell Lyte & dine with them. Lyte devotes much attention to me & talk turns on zoological subjects. Sample Dracenburg sherry & for a liquer Van der Hum. This is McCutcheon dinner, Major wine & my cigars (10d each) Conversation continues re animals. I ask re kraals & agree to see Major tomorrow re engage a car for visit to Drummonds (Valley of a 1000 Hills ) £4-10-0 or Maritzburg £9-0-0 or Unkomaas £7-0-0 These are Cooks price & are for four persons.
