used on account of its danger but another via Troutbeck which is 5¼ miles longer. However we are late & driver takes the risk much to terror of the only lady on the coach. Slate quarries now unworked are numerous & Helvellyn is in the distance. Arrive I go to White Lion Hotel intending to visit Rydal Water & Grasmere before dinner. However I see the new church & dine at 9.30 & intend to retire early but yarn with an officer & the landlady till late into the night & then sign the book & turn in for the night. Hotel. Bed 4/- Dinner 4/6 Breakfast 3/-

5-9-18 (Thurs)
The last day of leave intend to spend day travelling stopping for a while at Bath. Motor 6/- to Windermere for train at 7.25. The number of time & changes today is innumerable & the connections awful in fact it is just 12 when I arrive in camp & I have had no time to visit Bath. At Preston I have 1½ hours to wait  & visit town. A Gallery & Museum with Egyptian painting a wonderful scheme done in water colours. I think I see the site of Battle of Preston & some battle relics visit the C of E church & also St Wilfrids the RC church a magnificent interior with marble columns & costly altar. Rejoining train again I get as far as Crewe where I decide to dine as I have another hours wait. Then I wait again at Shrewsbury then another train in Pulford where I have tea on 2 cups of Bovril & sandwiches. I detrain here as by waiting 1 hour  I need not wait 2 hours somewhere else (Newport) & will get to Bristol quicker. I go through the Severn tunnel 3 miles in length 7 minutes journey actual part under river is 1½ miles & ¾ miles tunnelled approach is said to have cost £2,000,000. Pumps are kept constantly at work. At Bristol I have to rush to No 1 platform to catch train for Salisbury there is none to Denton or Fovant & arrive at Salisbury 10.35 pm get a taxi & then ride for camp like the devil
