tasted & 2 poached eggs. No meal tickets are required for this as coffee is without sugar. In midst of breakfast M starts off to meet Lees who had expressed a desire to travel with us & had to meet us at Kings Cross Station. M. is not heard of after this  He apparently went to Charing Cross. I see Lees on platform but he is detained at Horseferry & cannot accompany us. Have not seen M. Train starts  It is 22 carriages long. In my compartment are 3 flying cadets  One has lived in Victoria for many years. I might say I only just caught train as it took nearly a ½ hour to catch a taxi. The Club porter running out in middle of road every time he saw a motor & waving a red flag. We pass thru suburbs of London & am surprised at the freshness of the rosy cheeked girls in factories. Women are everywhere in this land doing a mans work whether in the field or factory  If necessary for the work they wear a loose bloomer arrangement. Country soon comes into view & consists of multitudes of pocket handkerchief sized farms each surrounded by a pretty green hedge. The fields alternate between the straw colour of ripened crops or the verdant green that only England knows. We have nothing so green in Aust: & it is only here that one learns the meaning of the word green. "Talk not of green till Eng you have seen". Often a field is straw & tinted red by myriads of poppies  In Kent I believe the fields are straw with stripes of red. On On we fly thru the pleasant fields of Lincolnshire which weary by their features. This fen country is very flat. This is succeeded by the flatness of the Yorkshire moor which the harvest is still as dense. The fields on which harvesting has commenced are still full of the piles of ungathered sheathes. Everywhere it is the same & in fact in the north the harvest has not been touched  Pass thro Grantham & on thro Durham with its old castle  perched on a knoll overlooking the river and as defiant as of yore guarding & protecting a huge monastery as heavy as itself
