Blacksmith - smithy passes oblong hole 2' to 3' long & 1' deep  At one end a long mound of good clay is erected with small hole through centre on basin side coals are placed in hole a horn to large end of which two bags are fastened. These bags are raised or lowered alternately mouth being opened in lifting & closed in lowering.  Assistant does this. Anvil consists of ironstone & a smaller piece is hammer.  Tongs are barks sharpened at each end & bent double like tweezers.  Soon burnt out. Household utensils summed up = 2 or 3 cooking pots (clay, wooden spoons, eating mats (izitebe) on which meat is served, clay beer pots, palm leaf beer strainers, & several knives.  Plates, forks, dishes, cups had originally no wood & were unkown.  Now Kaffirised woods have been made.  Wheelbarrow once carried on head  Native women carry 40 to 60 lbs weight eg firewood gracefully balanced on cranium.  Water is carried in this way.  Assegai [spears] only made even now by native smiths often used as a knife. Lamps & candles unkown.  Fire gave all light needed also smoke. Fire made by pulling pointed stick in hole of another. The first being turned rapidly between palms of hands contrivance called "uzwati"  

Native mill.  A long hollow stone with smooth round crushing stone which is wored rapidly back & forwards.

Grain stamper. Trunk of small tree with stamper 3 ft long with large knob on each end like dumbell.  Grain is poured in mixed with water & "pestled" until husk is removed & this washed dried & boiled.  Pear shaped calabashes are hollowed from small holes in neck  Gourds are scooped out & now used as plates.  Although usual method is to put porridge in one large pot & each one dips his spoon in it in turn.  A separate pot is given to women.

Beer is brewed by soaking maize or millet in water till it sprouts.  The sprouted maize is then dried in sun ground in mill as described & boiled. This is allowed to stand till fermentation takes place when it is again boiled & put in earthenware pots until ready for use.  The process
