For 18 days we have travelled across the sea without ceasing, and in 7 more it is said we will reach Panama and we have never had a really rough day, the Pacific has kept its name to us for sure.

Chapter V "Panama"

On the 25th of November we sighted the islands and coasts of Panama.

Beautiful islands shot up out of the sea, as if to greet us verdant from top to bottom.

One particular island had its picturesqueness enhanced, by a snowywhite churchsteeple showing through the greenery halfway to its treeclad summit. Emerald isles in a sea of Azure. Never have I seen lands more lovely.

On the right mainland lay the modern city of Panama, and on an island nearby lies the old city. What old memories of history the old city conjures up of Galleons of the spoils from the Incas, and of old buccaneers.

As one enters a bold bluff rises up ahead reminding one of pictures of Gibraltar
