We were not allowed to build possies in the side, as it causes the sides to fall in and widen the trenches. But just at the back of the trench was a little hole in which I got; the only one available and it was very acceptable. It was a crampy little place and a Fritz had been buried about 2 feet deep in a little shellhole about a yd away. But worst of all the entrance faced enemy fire as Fritz had built it.

Here we had the pleasure of wiring out in front, and were hunted off the scene with whizz-bangs a couple of nights, also the old stew and tucker fatigues to the outposts. One night A Coy was to make a raid, so we did our fatigue quickly and were just coming up the C, T, when Fritz started shelling the raiders were at work and when we got back into the support our Lewis Gun section got orders to occupy an outpost it was nearly dawn and the first shelling had subsided. We got our equipment hurridly on and started along the trench further on we got out of the trench to go overland and just as we did Fritz put down a bombard and we seemed to be fair in the middle
