Chapter X1

"Villers Brettoneuse".

The silent dwellers of the tomb are dust and earth once more,

Mans ashes by the wind are spread untombed on every shore,

We seek to analyse the draught that holds our souls in spell,

And nothing of the last great day or his designs can tell.

We moved from the road to a support near our old front line known as, "diggers supports", where we were for 4 days. While here we used to have to dig C, J, from our old front line to his, and as soon as we went out to dig, for a couple of nights our artillery would do a shoot, and up would go his S,O,S, red lights, and the order would come get undercover we're on his barrage line. The first night I just got into the old german line, and down it came a regular hurrican of whizz-bangs, but I don't think anyone was wounded as the trench was a very narrow, deep one it splashed a lot of dirt about. The second night the same thing happened but we didn't have time to get to the old German line and took shelter in shellholes and possies about; after it was over, one of them said I don't go much on getting into holes about here I got into one and then found a skeleton along side of me, such things are common around
