A whine, like swift anger and agony mingles, passed high over us from the enemy, and changed slightly as it passes, till it is almost like a whistle from the lips of [indecipherable]

It is the sound of a shell sent into the city, to further wreck and destroy and to slay.

We listen

Hark!

We wait and watch

For we know there will soon be a merciless explosion, and a flash to tell us in what part of the city this messenger of evil falls.

We hear, and behold and from the knowledge we have already obtained of the avenues of wreck, we judge the heavy curse has fallen and expended its terrific fury
