Xmas Day 1916
[in right margin] No letters yet
spent dull xmas never mind dear

Dear Beatrice

I did not forget that the anniversary of our wedding day was in November close to cup day, but being at the busy battle front I was unable to get an opportunity of writing at the time.

The pleasant and dearest events of our lives are indelible in memory
The ordinary incidents of trouble around to most people battling against fortune, we can look back upon merely as so many [indecipherable] patches in the road of life
And though there remains a never to be obliterated memory of tragedy sad and bitter to us both and which even now at times
