Vile gilded flies leads ones sight to where the shoulder bones of another hastily buried brave man lies. A single blood red poppy droops close by a little cross on which is crudly written in indelible pencil "Here lies a soldier unknown"

A white butterfly like the ghost of a holy thought flits by to rest awhile on a struging nettle, and flit again and he gone

A silent brown sparrow is in search of vanished eaves which never shall be built again.

A party of soldiers are mending a road through this festering scar of war to lead to the front that the enemy may be reached
