Dear Beatrice
'Hope deferred makes the heart sick'

This old saying expresses my feelings better than anything else just now.
Sometime ago the Colonel commanding this dreary camp agreed that my case was a hard one, and warranted special consideration. He therefore agreed to let me have furlough and recommended an advance of £5- to enable me to live during that spell of freedom

Unfortunately he found [indecipherable] the sanction of higher authority was necessary before I could do. I am now waiting the pleasure of that higher authority which I no doubt is enjoying its Xmas holidays amongst friends in the [indecipherable] and hospitality of true kinship and cheer, quite forgetful of the
