"What, then, will happen" I enquired
"O you may be here for several months training and then be sent on to your company" was the reply
Stupid, o the military is so stupid
I knew my company could do with reinforcements
I knew there was room for hundreds of men at the front. I knew lives could be saved by having extra men
Yet in spite of all this I was to be put through the useless old drill once more no matter if men were dying for help up there in the trenches where all the training in the world was found to be next to useless.
Next day quite unexpectedly a draft of men was lined to go to the front as reinforcements for various Engineer Companies. I at one took my place in the line, but was pulled out by a gruff Sergeant who told me my name was not on the list
