Of course I was well aware of that.
But there might yet be a chance I thought, so I hung around in wait for the unexpected.
It came, as I somehow thought it would
One man failed to answer his number
"Where is that man who wants to go" said the Sergeant
"Here" and with that I stepped into the vacant place

We were all examined by the M.O. furnished with kits, equipment and ammunition and that night lodged in one hut under instruction to be ready to move off at 3 o'clock next morning.

That was to be the last marching out of many of those brave men.
