Saturday 8th
Had a bad night. Very little sleep. Infantry men do not appear to realise their responsibilities. Asleep in trenches etc. About 10 am enemy opened their artillery on us & gave us the warmest time we have had yet. Shells bursting all around us & one landed in one of our guns & broke our trench & gear. We had just left the pit to be relieved by 9th Battery for a few days. The Engineers were just at that time making a road to get our guns out but luckily no one was hit. Several shells blew up in our pit. There was a number of casualties on the beach. In
