of green vegetation. We were just on the edge of it & one of our men was shot through the leg (Eagle) [1616 Horace Frederick Eagle DCM, KIA, 11/10/1917]. Bullets were "pinging" all around us up till about 4 PM. We were at our gun pits & orders were revd [received] to stop & take the guns further up on the ridge. This was right on the firing line of trenches a most unprecedented action in warfare. We did this just on dark & had our guns in position in a rough pit to fire that night.
