2/ orderly officer to Col Royston I would have had a great time & certainly got mention in despatches & possibly something even better. It was the chance of a life time & I'm exceedingly bitter at having missed it. We may now participate in the pursuit & the new campaign wherever it may lead but the last Light Horse stunt of the war has past & we were not in it. Not actually in it. We were just pawns in the game. You will have heard that Col Royston was wounded and Geo (Col) Onslow badly wounded & the 1st & 2nd L.H. Brigades lost about 500 men in killed and wounded. But the Turks lost about 1500 killed & wounded, & 4,000 prisoners. I have not slept in a bed for 3 months, & not even on my stretcher for weeks. It is out in the open desert every night. But the weather is mild at night. Tho' hot in the day & I'm thriving on the hard fare ....
No word from home for about a fortnight or more. Hope you are all fit and &well & happy. Tell
