My dear Old Dad

If this letter does not stray from the straight & narrow path it should reach Sydney just about the time you are celebrating your three score years and ten.   So I'm taking this opportunity of wishing you all the good luck in the world & many, many happy returns of the day.   I can't quite believe that you really are 70. It seems only the other day that you rowed me round  Blackwattle  Bay like a Searle or Hanlon. It does not seem a year since we swam in the baths  at Balmain & you licked me by more than a yard. I dont know how long it is since you got one short of the possible at Randwick.   And its not long since you made a few runs at cricket.   But since that Gallipoli stunt I've found quite a few grey hairs in my own thick head so I must really reconcile myself to the fact that you are really
