3/    many of the ornaments are very precious.

The streets of Malta are all very narrow.   In the main street  the crowds are very dense.   The side streets are very steep falling right  down to the water on either side.   Beggars abound.   Guides by the dozen hang  round seeking patronage.

The 'cab-men' or whatever they call them followed us for hundreds of yards beseeching us to have a ride.   But the prevailing and remaining impression of Malta is the smell.   We came aboard late last night after having a very inferior dinner at the leading hotel.   The harbour looked very fine at night with all the lights.   We left today at noon, when the midday sun reverberated amongst the hills of Malta.   We are now somewhere in the Mediterranean (of course).   I do not know whether we are going to Salonika or Lemnos or Alexandria.   I will tell you later on...

In the meantime let me assure you all of my excellent health and spirits. I send you all my love.   May we meet soon.

Yours  Ol
